A Public School That's Doing Things Right - A Testimonial with David Higbee

Sometimes, you get a winner in conventional school...David Higbee, a father of five, shares how Ashland Middle School is doing things right! No wonder Ashland Middle School's tagline is "Inspiring learning for life..."

There are a myriad of ways that the school helped his children feel welcome but what stands out most is that they help each child feel seen, heard and valued. Don't we all want that for our children? Also, the school doesn't operate with the arbitrary, competition-based grading system. Instead they use Not Proficient, Proficient and Mastery to describe how each child is meeting their subjects at school. This is more of an internal state of accomplishment.

This testimonial is just to show that we can be asking more of our conventional school systems. We can be asking for the children to be shown respect and this is how we can build a community that supports each child's unique gifts. We cannot just keep doing the same...the systems do not support the raising of a well-balanced, self-assured human being (unless maybe this child is of the top 1% of the grading system. Everyone else will feel "less than").
